So, what does a last-minute student move in Oxford actually involve? Below, we’ll explain how quickly you can realistically book a removals service, how college and city access restrictions can affect your move, and when using storage may be a better solution than making a second trip home.
Why do students in Oxford end up moving at short notice?

Many colleges require students to vacate their rooms shortly after term ends, as accommodation is often used for summer conference guests and other visitors. Private tenancies can create a different challenge. For example, if your house share in East Oxford ends on 30 June but your next tenancy doesn’t begin until 1 September, you’ll need somewhere to keep your belongings in the meantime.
For some students, summer internships, research placements, years abroad or graduation plans can make move dates even more complicated, especially when schedules don’t quite line up.
Then there are the unexpected changes. A housemate might pull out, a tenancy could fall through, or a landlord may serve notice. Exam timetables, viva dates or travel plans can also change at short notice, leaving students needing to move sooner than anticipated. Even a cancelled van hire or a delayed visa decision can quickly turn a well-planned move into a last-minute one.

What can student movers actually take?

Furniture
Desks, chairs, bookcases, chests of drawers, wardrobes and bed frames from private rentals can all be moved. Mattresses and mattress toppers should be protected in bags where possible. Sports equipment
Rowing equipment, ergometers, hockey sticks, tennis rackets, skis and climbing gear can all be transported. If you row or cycle for a club, best to mention the bulky items when you book so the space is set aside in the van accordingly.
Musical instruments
Guitars and violins are usually straightforward to transport when they’re stored in protective hard cases. Larger instruments, such as cellos, double basses, keyboards and amplifiers, may need a bit more planning, so mention them and the right space and padding can be arranged.
Important
Keep valuable or essential items with you rather than in the removals van. This includes your passport, BRP (if applicable), degree certificates, jewellery, laptop and any important documents.
Preparing for a move when you have 48 hours
Start with the deposit – photograph every room before you start packing, and check the inventory you signed at the start.
If you are in a private tenancy, then your deposit should be protected in a government-approved scheme. College rooms work differently. So check your accommodation agreement for the charging schedule.
From there, a simple run-through covers most of it.
- Pack an essentials bag for the first night and keep it with you
- Label boxes by destination room instead of the contents in the box.
- Bag screws and fittings and tape them to the furniture they belong to
- Take meter readings if you are the named bill payer, and photograph them
- Confirm exactly where keys go back, to the lodge or the letting agent, and by what time
- Book a cleaner or agree who is doing what if you are in a house share
- Update your address with your bank, GP, the university and Royal Mail
- Empty and defrost anything with a freezer compartment the night before
- Confirm where the van can legally stop
Moving between student accommodation in Oxford
City centre colleges are the trickiest. Vehicle access usually runs through a lodge and a gate, often within a fixed window agreed in advance, and quads are not loading bays. Oxford also operates a Zero Emission Zone pilot covering nine city centre streets, including Cornmarket Street, Queen Street, New Inn Hall Street, Ship Street and St Michael’s Street, where petrol and diesel vehicles including hybrids are charged between 7 am and 7 pm.

Headington is where most of Brookes’ accommodation and a large share of postgraduate housing are located. Access is generally easier than the centre, though the residential streets off London Road fill quickly in June.
Cowley and East Oxford are dominated by Victorian terraces with narrow hallways, steep stairs and no off-street parking. Wardrobes and desks often have to come out at an angle. Letting the crew know about larger furniture when you book helps them arrive with the right equipment and enough time.
Jericho has the tightest streets in the city and permit parking on almost all of them.
Summertown, Marston and Iffley are usually more straightforward, with more houses that have driveways or wider frontages.
